MAKING THE MOST OF "YOUR" MASSAGE
Prior to Massage
- Drinking several glasses of water before and after a massage, may reduce the level of soreness and aide in the body's toxin removal.
- Do not eat just before a massage session.
- However, Diabetics should and are responsible for making certain they are not at risk for a Insulin reaction during their session time.
- Be on time. If you arrive in a frenzied, rushed state, it will take longer to get to a relaxed state.
- Please let your massage therapist know in advance if you need to cancel.
- A 24 hour notification of cancellation is required, please see my Policies Policies
- Undressing: You will be asked to dress down to your comfort level
- If you do not want to remove all your clothing, be sure to wear clothing that you will be comfortable wearing during the massage and will allow for touching and movement of the areas you expect will need to be worked on.
- Please give accurate health information.
- It is important to disclose any medications, Prescriptions as well as Over the counter drugs you may be taking.
- Give "ALL" Diagnosed Health Conditions: There are some Medications and Health conditions that are contraindicated for receiving massage and may need your treating Physicians approval,.
- Be certain to let the therapist know prior to your Massage if you Bruise Easily: or if you have Allergies to fragrances, oils or lotions.
- Good communication is very important: Before the session, let your needs be known
- Tell the massage therapist about past or recent injuries
Especially those that continue to cause problems or pain. This will assist the therapist with your injuries either to help the healing process or avoid further injury. - Be certain to inform the therapist of areas you "Do NOT" want massaged and wish for them to avoid.
- Be as receptive and open to the process as possible.
- Don’t be afraid to discuss any apprehensions or concerns. It is important that you be as comfortable as possible during your massage. Your massage therapist is a professional dedicated to do her best to help you feel at ease.
During Your session
- Breathing helps to facilitate relaxation.
- People often stop or limit their breath when they feel anxious or a sensitive area is massaged. If you realize you are stopping your breathing, let yourself breathe.
- Tightening up, i.e., contracting or hardening your muscles during the massage is counterproductive.
- If you are able to, relax those muscles, if you feel you cannot and your therapist seems unaware Let her know. She may need to adjust the massage technique being used, and may also be able to help you relax the affected area.
- If you find you Have racing thoughts during the massage, one way to be more body-centered and to quiet the mind is to follow the hands of the massage therapist and focus on how the touch feels.
- During the massage session, report any discomfort:
- Feel free to give feedback regarding the massage, e.g., amount of pressure, speed of movement, etc.
- Whether your discomfort is due to any problems or distractions related to the environment, e.g., room temperature, music volume, type of music, lighting, etc. let your therapist know.
- If anything is happening during the massage that you dislike or seems improper, you have the right to ask the massage therapist to stop. If necessary, you also have the right to end the session.
- If you are dizzy or light headed after the massage, do not get off the table too fast:
- This is often a result of increased blood flow, bringing more oxygen to the brain.
After Your Massage
- Drink extra water after a massage.
- Depending on your general physical condition, if its your first massage Or if its been several months since your last massage, it may leave you slightly sore.
- It's like exercise - your body may have to adjust to it.
- As tissue becomes healthier, you will appreciate deeper and more vigorous massage.
- Massage has its greatest benefits over time.
- The therapeutic effects of massage are cumulative, so the more often a person gets a massage, the better he or she will feel and the more quickly one’s body will respond.
- From one session to the next, relaxation deepens as the chronic patterns of stress in the body are affected and released. These changes are readily felt in day-to-day life as well, which adds another dimension of reinforcement.
- If you are getting massage to address chronic muscular tension or recovery from a soft tissue injury, more than one session is usually needed, so be prepared to schedule several sessions.
